Requirements Lost in Translation Educators Worry About Gap in State's Foreign Language Statute

"Hola," they yell back, laughing and smiling.

"Tell your partner goodbye," Nelson says. "Adios!" they reply in unison.

"Tell your partner tengo hambre," she says, as she puts her hand on her stomach to illustrate hunger.

Students are learning Spanish as part of a state law that requires schools to teach a foreign language to children in kindergarten, first and second grades.

The statute doesn't say how much instruction and doesn't mandate the language to be taught. What districts do can vary widely.
