When Hospital-Acquired Infection Rates Are Tough to Find, It Is Frustrating for Patients Concerned About Their Safety

In August of 2002, Casper resident Jeanette Fuentes underwent a simple surgery that almost killed her - a year and a half later.

Her journey began when she entered Wyoming Medical Center in Casper on Aug. 13, 2002, for surgery on a hiatal hernia, a bulging of the stomach into the upper chest cavity.

It ended with a chronic bacterial infection dreaded by hospitals: methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. It is one of dozens of infections that can be acquired by otherwise healthy patients who enter health-care settings.
